Chapter 8

“DUDE, SORRY to bug you this early….” Jake heard feminine giggling in the background. “Oops, really sorry. I shouldn’t have called so late. I mean… early.” He had no clue when Randy had last gotten laid, so he didn’t want to impede his progress.

“No worries. What’s wrong?”

Randy had to know something was up. Whether Jake’s voice gave him away or the time of the call, he’d never know.

“I don’t want to bug you if this is a bad time.” Jake didn’t want to cockblock his best buddy. “And by bad I mean you doing deliciously dirty things with a certain lovely lady in your bed.”

Randy chuckled. “You’re not calling at a bad time.” He must have covered the phone because Lalana’s laughter sounded muffled.

“Ah, you already knocked boots. Excellent.” Jake laughed.

Randy tried to sound shocked and annoyed, but it came out as just plain happy. “Jake! Don’t be crass.” He chuckled.

“Okay. Look if this isn’t a bad time, I called to find out Lalana’s number.” Jake hoped Randy wouldn’t ask too many details about why Jake would want to speak to her.

“Um, okay. Hold on.”

After a brief wait, Lalana’s voice came on. “Randy said you wanted to speak to me?”

“Um, yeah. Could you come to my room? It’s 374.”

“Why?” Her voice got higher than usual.

“I want to talk to you about Boon-nam.”

“What’s wrong with her?”

“Nothing. I just… you know, never mind. Bad idea.” The tat had started to sting a bit.

“No. I’ll be at your room in five minutes.”

Lalana didn’t take no for an answer. She ended the call before Jake could argue with her.

Ow! Fuck. As he buttoned his shirt, the fabric brushed against his tattoo, making him cry out like a baby. Damn, maybe he’d put a bandage on it after Lalana left.

Within three minutes, a soft knock on the door woke him out of his stupor. He unlatched his hotel door to welcome Lalana in.

“Have a seat. You want something to drink?” Jake asked, stalling for time.

“No.” Lalana sat on the coach. She crossed her legs primly and surveyed him for a moment before she broke their staring contest.

“So?” She tapped a nail against the arm of the sofa.

“Boon-nam—”

Nodding, Lalana snapped, “Yes? What about my little butterfly?”

Jake didn’t miss Lalana’s possessiveness when it came to Boon-nam. He resisted the urge to call Boon-nam his little tiger. Lalana had been nice enough to come—he didn’t need to thank her by irritating her on purpose.

“Well, I, um….”

Damn, this is a shitty idea. He wasn’t in high school begging advice from his crush’s best friend. He shrugged and finished his musing because he needed to say something. “I like her. A lot.”

“Outstanding. She’s a sweetheart,” Lalana stated, deadpan.

The woman seemed determined to not make this easy on him. Frowning, she shook her long brown hair. “And you are going to hurt her. I know you are.”

No. He remained silent. She wouldn’t believe him, but he shook his head.

She appeared sad and almost helpless as if she would cry. “You know you will.
